Registered Nurse Clinical Charge-Cardiac

Shift: Full-time /1.0 40 hrs per week 8A-5P


To coordinate the day to day work flow on the nursing unit to meet patient care needs. This role will focus on nursing process, physician communication, case management and resource utilization. This role communications and reports to the Nurse Manager.

QUALITY OF CARE: The assistant nurse manager plays a pivotal role in the interdisciplinary oversight of quality patient care on the unit. Reports all issues or concerns to the Nurse Manager.

  • Ensures patient assessments are completed accurately and on time for all patient

  • Ensures that patient care goals and outcomes are clearly documented for all patients and individualized plan of care is completed per timelines identified in policy

  • Ensures report is given based on plan of care with goals identified

  • Serves as resource to others in using patient outcomes or core measure indicators to organize their plan of care and care delivery methods

  • Assists in unit specific PI process to achieve best practice

  • Assists unit clinical leadership in identifying clinical intervention or inefficiencies to be evaluated through quality monitoring

  • Ensures that the physical environment on the unit promotes quality patient outcomes

  • Takes an active role in assisting staff to incorporate research and best practices in patient care into their individual practice

  • Recognizes trends in the delivery of patient care on the unit and discusses with Nurse Manager

  • Monitors current patient care practices and is alert to areas of improvement

  • Successfully manages clinical crisis situations

  • Demonstrates a practical problem solving approach to patient moving and handling issues

  • Demonstrates skills to promote patient and staff safety through appropriate use of lift equipment

  • Possesses knowledge and skills necessary to obtain adequate lab specimens for testing.

  • Performs patient bedside lab testing and associated quality control in compliance with medical provider’s orders and hospital lab procedures/policies.

UTILIZATION OF RESOURCES: Identifies circumstances that require redistribution or addition of staff based on unit activity, patient acuity, and staff orientation/training needs.

  • Identifies circumstances that require redistribution of care team resources to better meet the needs of the patients during a given shift

  • Makes patient assignment based on skill of caregiver and needs of patients

  • Ensures that patient care activities and unit operations are delegated in a fair and efficient manner

  • Uses staffing targets and census optimization to maintain productivity

  • Assists with staffing decisions keeping costs and resource utilization in mind

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION: Acts as clinical liaison between nursing, healthcare providers, and physicians to communicate interdisciplinary approach to patient care needs and promotes teamwork.

  • Assists with communicating unit information

  • Works closely with physicians and other disciplines to keep patient on plan of care timeline - includes knowledge of progress notes, implementation of orders, and discharge plans

  • Communicates with resident consultants and/or case manager to have oversight of admissions, complex patients, and to expedite discharges

  • Communicates any problems to Nurse Manager or Nursing Supervisor that need further attention

  • Assists with communications regarding physical changes in patient status

  • Makes referrals to long-term care units and Home Health as needed

  • Makes patient rounds as needed by Nurse Manager

  • Monitors work volumes and assists in promoting teamwork

  • Inspires teams and individuals to achieve desired outcomes

  • Assists in accomplishing unit, department, and organizational goals

  • Collaborates with other disciplines to design, implement, and evaluate systems of care to achieve targeted clinical outcomes

  • Ensures delegated tasks are done appropriately

  • Listens to report on all patients daily

  • Assures unit functions are completed

  • Monitors staff to develop skills and promote excellence at the bedside

  • Identifies processes that cause insufficiency and communicate to Nurse Manager

  • Organizes and leads unit activities that develop more efficient way of delivering patient care

  • Organizes formal interdisciplinary care conferences based on identified patient needs

  • Uses effective conflict resolution strategies

  • Creates a climate of ongoing learning for self and staff.

  • Assists with admissions and noncomplicated discharges.

  • Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in the field(s) of nursing Preferred

  • Individuals hired after August 1, 2013 must obtain a BSN within 2.5 years of hire

  • Work Experience

  • 3-5 years of experience in/with nursing, demonstrated ability for problem solving, decision making, and establishing effective rapport with personnel, patients, families, physicians and colleagures, documentation of continued professional growth, including clinical leadership abilities. Preferred.

  • License and Certification

  • Registered Nurse in the state of IL

  • Valid CPR required before start date
