UnityPoint Health Assistant Manager Nurse in Peoria, Illinois

To coordinate the day to day work flow of the department to meet patient care needs. This role is to focus on nursing process, physician communication, patient flow, employee competence, resource utilization and patient/family/physician and staff satisfaction. The assistant will function as a member of the assigned department leadership team.

  • QUALITY OF CARE: The assistant nurse manager plays a prvotal role in interdisciplinary oversight of quality patient care on unit. Reports all issues or concerns to the Nurse Manager.

  • Ensures patient assessments are completed.

  • Ensures that patient care outcomes are clearly documented for all patients.

  • Serves as resource to others in using patient outcomes or core measure indicators to organize their plan of care and care delivery methods.

  • Assists in unit specific PI process to achieve best practice

  • Takes an active role in assisting staff to incorporate research and best practices in patient care into their individual practice.

  • Recognizes trends in the delivery of patient care on the unit and discusses with Nurse Manager

  • Monitors current patient care practices and is alert to areas of improvement

  • Successfully manages clinical crisis situations

  • Assists Nurse Manager in meeting employee satisfacion goals

  • Assist Nurse Manager in service recovery activities.

  • Participates in gathering data on PI initiatives, including chart review

  • Participates in determining root causes

  • Participates in developing, implementing, and evaluating action plans

  • Develops a schedule that meets staffing needs

  • Serves on unit operations council

  • UTILIZATION OF RESOURCES: Identifies circumstances that require redistribution or addition of staff based on unit activity, patient acutiy, and staff orientation/training needs.

  • Identifies circumstances require redistribution of care team resources to better meet the needs of the patients during a given shift.

  • Ensures that patient care activities and unit operations are delegated in a fair and efficient manner

  • Uses staffing targets and census optimization to maintain prductivity target

  • Assists with staffing decisions keeping costs and resource utilization in mind

  • Alerts Nurse Manager in a timely manner releated to not-staff resource needs.

  • Delivers nursing care when necessary

  • Assists the Nurse Manager in the annual performance review process for the department

  • Mentors developing registered nurses

  • Performs corrective action up to and including a written corective action

  • Completes and administers annual performance reviews

  • EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION: Acts as clinical liaison between nursing, healthcare providers, and physicians to communicate interdisciplinary approach to patient care needs and promotes teamwork.

  • Assists with communicating unit information and clarifies issues as needed.

  • Communicates any problems to the Nurse Manager or Nursing Supervisor that need further attention timely.

  • Assists with communications regarding physical changes in patient status

  • Makes patient rounds daily in the OR/PACU

  • Demonstrates good listening skills with staff members and physicians

  • TEAMWORK/Coordination of Care: Supports a positive,collaborative, professional, work environment.

  • Assists the Nurse Manager in helping nursing staff to develop clinically and professionally

  • Assists the Nurse Manager in retention efforts for the department

  • Assists the Nurse Manager in recruitment efforts-including but not limited to attending employment fairs, assisting in selection process.

  • Assumes leadership role in a clinical crisis situation

  • Demonstrates advanced assessment skills, knowledge of equipment and supplies used within the department

  • Serves as a role model for professional behavior/attitude

  • Functions as role model for staff in embracing the concept of continuous improvement

  • Education

  • BSN preferred

  • Individuals hired after August 1, 2013 must obtain a BSN within 2.5 years of hire

  • Work Experience

  • 3-5 years experience with inpatient nursing. Demonstrated excellence in patient care and interpersonal skills with both patients/families and colleagues required

  • License and Certification

  • Registered Nurse in state of Illinois required

  • Valid CPR required within 60 days of start date as RN

  • Certification in specialty and/or BSN is preferred
